May I suggest the following tutorial detailing how to access to your templates parameters.. http://www.joomla51.com/tutorials/item/how-to-access-your-template-parameters
Sorry to say however there is no option available with our PianoForte template to add a background image to this area of the template.

Am I an absolut beginner and waiting also for an answer, but on the Template Calibra you can do i in the Template Parameter.
Go to the template Manager/--> Styles. Klick to your used Style ( this is the one withe the yelloq star (favorit).
There your go to Option.
Here you can easy modify your Template.
1) Maybe @ Styling and background opacity.
2) Or under Styling and background image....
But , hey, it is only a tip from a newbie....
