Hi Ciarán
I saw on twitter that all J4 templates now are ready to support the new child templates inroduced in Joomla 4.1. I have one site that runs J51_ nina, so I downloaded the actual vesion which should be 1.1.0 and did an update, that is, I installed the template over the old version. The thing is, it wrote things into /media/templates/site all right, however when I look into the backend, it still shows the old file structure and the button that now should be meant to create children would is still labelled 'create template copy' and clicking on it does not do anything. Also, nothing gets moved from the template folder to the media folder. That means, my custom.css still lives in /templates even though it still loads in the front end. Also, in the back end, when I go to system->side templates it shows no prewiew picture of the template.
When I install the same template on a fresh joomla install, everything seems to be just as intended.

Something seems very wrong with the way the update process works .Any suggestions on how to make this work?

Hi Chris

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. It seems the custom.css was not been ported through the child template. We have just updated the template fixing both this issue and the thumbnails issue.

Updating your template to the latest download should resolve this issue for you. For details on updating your template may I suggest the following article.. https://joomla51.com/tutorials/joomla-basics/updating-your-joomla-template

Thanks Ciarán, sorry to bother you again with this, but I did download the template afresh (V 1.1.1) and did the update again.
Unfortunately this did not rectify the problem, as you can glean from the attached pictures. The custom.css lives still in templates/.../css as all the rest.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris

May I suggest sending temporary administration access to your Joomla installation to info@joomla51.com and we will examine this issue further. For our reference please paste a link to this post in your email.

Although there is a copy of the media files in your template folder, the files that are actually been loaded by your template should reside in your media folder.

Ciarán, I sent you the account details.

BTW I discovered on my loacal test site, that when I delete the template and then install the 1.1.1 version, the preview image is there, and thins seem to work OK, but there are folders for css, images, js, and fonts in both /templates and /media/templates/site. This ist not the case in cassiopeia, these folders are present in the media path. But then, looking at your XML file, this is what's written there. I suggest that you remove this double copying from there.

Cheers, Chris

Thank you Chris

We notice some issues with your Joomla environment that we are unable to replicate elsewhere. Specifically that your template editor does not give the option to create a child template of a parent. Could I ask you to remove any plugins that you are not using so we can eliminate them from causing such issues.

Thanks, Ciarán
I have disabled all plugins that I can live without at the moment, cleaned the cache and I can see no difference at the moment.

I have gone through the remainder of your plugins however none appear to be causing this issue. I notice you have uninstalled the default template (Cassiopeia). Were you able to create a child template for Cassiopeia prior to uninstalling?

I have not uninstalled but deactivated Cassiopeia on the site. If you glance at the backend again, you'll notice it's now activated and that there's a child of it now. It was created without any hassle and as far as I can see, all the files were created and put in their proper places. In my view, that's not the problem.
On a site note, I have a client site running the same template and I did an update of nina there as well. As expected, the result ist the same: It shows neither a preview pic, nor does it show the media folder in the back end under template files. Also the button that should create children is labelled wrong and does not do anything.

Thank you for the update

I will have a chat with Dimitris who developed this feature for Joomla 4.1 and see if he has any insight into why this issue may be occurring. I will keep you posted on any updates. Thank you for your patience.

Hi Chris

I have made another update to your template. Chatting with Dimitris and It seems the Joomla update API has some strict XML naming requirements that when not adhered to can cause some breaking changes to the child templates features.

Let me know if this has resolved your issue?

Thank you

Hi Chris

We hadn't actually created a new release yet. The update installed to your site was a test run to ensure the issue was resolved. I have reinstalled this update. You should now find that you can now create child templates, your site CSS is loaded from the media folder and the template thumbnail is available.

Hi, Ciarán,
sorry I misunderstood what you meant.
Yes, it now looks much better that before. There's still one thing that bothers me:

At the moment you do not (on updating templates) move any cusom files to the new location. As you see from my site, there is no custom.css getting loaded, because it still lives in the old file structure. Only when I copy the custom.css manually to /media, it gets loaded.

Apart from this, it seems to work, notably I was able to see a preview image, create a child template and I could edit files.

Thanks very much indeed for your speedy work, Ciarán!

Hi Chris

Thank you for the update and I agree, there is definitely some room for improvement. We are currently working on an update script that will move all css, js, font and images from the template folder to the media folder. It is something that we will need to test thoroughly as this will be a custom script and may have some negative side effects in other ways. Unfortunately, Joomla itself does not have an interface to copy/move/delete files when installing.
