Is there a way I can 'stretch; a showcase module so it spans over one or more positions as in the graphic attached?

Considering all screensize and image ratio, this is only possible by cropping the slideshow image. Is this suitable?

OK, is it possible to merge modules together - Where the slideshow spans say 3 showcase modules whilst having a 4th - 75-25%

You can adjust the width of module positions via the Module WIdths tab of your template settings. For details on placing modules inside a module may I suggest the following article.. https://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_put_a_module_inside_an_article%3F
