having a problem with the redirect on user login going to wrong page "joomla3". Solved it by creating a new menu item but this eventually breaks down as well.

Sorry to say this would not be a template related issue so hard for me to say for sure. You could maybe try a Joomla extension specific to this task. Maybe something like... http://extensions.joomla.org/extension/redirect-on-login
