Hi Ciaran
I just did a test upgrade to J4 on a junk URL - I uninstalled Skylar before doing so but left your other J51 modules (e..g. layer slideshow, news) in place.
On completing the upgrade, I could enter the back end perfectly well but the front end was broken with a message about one of the J51 modules, so I uninstalled them all.
I've now noticed that I have none of the modules built using your modules. I reinstalled all the modules but no difference.
Is there a better way forward than just to recreate the whole lot please? I've used your code extensively and to do so manually will take a while!

Hello
I would also add that if you find error messages are been displayed with your modules, opening up the affected module settings and saving should resolve these errors.

Hello,
I have done some upgrades to J4 in he last weeks and I always do it this way:
- set standard template from J51 template to Protostar
- go to extensions/manage search for J51 and disable all modules and template (no uninstall... only disabling....).
- do the rest I need to do before upgrade ...
- upgrade to J4
- go to my installation via SFTP and delete all files in templates/j51_xxx/html (all the overwrites)
- install the J4 version of the J51_xxx template
- enable the J51 template and set template standard back to J51 template
- reinstall my needed modules of the J4 version (news, layerslideshoe ... whatever)
- enable the modules I need
Maybe it's not the correct way to do it, but for us it works
When someone throws their hands up in horror now, than pls let me know what to do better - I am always willing to learn better ways to do an upgrade
Regards
Oliver

Yeah, in the guide it says "When it comes to templates, uninstall all core frontend or backend templates except Protostar and Beez3 (frontend templates) and Isis or Hathor (administrator templates). NOTE: Protostar is NOT compatible with Joomla 4. Upon migration it will disappear. You'll need to have one template selected as "default" and you can use Protostar or Beez3. Protostar will disappear upon migration to Joomla 4.x."

Hi Ciaran
Interestingly, this was present on Friday but has gone away today. I'll monitor it
Many thanks for all your help, I have two remaining small issues but I'll log those as separate cases
Your support is always fantastic and very much appreciated

Hi L
May I suggest sending temporary administration access to your Joomla installation to info@joomla51.com and we will examine this issue further. For our reference please paste a link to this post in your email.

Thank you Liz
Would you have uninstalled your J51 modules before re-installing? Looking at your module manager, it looks like there is no J51 modules present with the exception of some blank modules created on install. Re-installing alone would not remove your old modules however uninstalling prior to reinstalling will.

Hi Ciaran
I uninstalled the modules AFTER the upgrade, not before. I did this because the front end wasn't displaying and showing an error message relating to J51_news. Back end was fine
Shall I go back to a 3.10.xx again and repeat the process? If I did so, what would be the correct course of things? e.g. upgrade to J4.2.xx, then install your J4 template for Skylar, and the J4 versions of the modules? or is there a better way?

Hi Oliver
That's interesting - I thought Protostar was going in J4 and the advice was NOT to use this template.
Other steps look good, however.

Hi,
as Protostar is the J3 default template, it makes sense (and afaik its recommended by Joomla) to set it as default before upgrade.
In the upgrade process it will be replaced by Cassiopeia, the J4 default template.
Thats why I do it like this...

Hi Ciaran,
I'm really sorry, I'm really struggling here.
I've re-done the upgrade from a fresh install to a fresh database. It's still pulling the same error about J51 news and breaking the site.
Could you have a look for me please?I've spent all afternoon getting nowhere.
This is the same error which lead me to uninstall the components in the beginning, but I don't know where to go from here.
Apologies for having to ask.

Hi L
The issue appears to be with one of your modules. I have remove all module positions and your template then loads fine. As you have a lot of modules, could I ask you to remove any modules you are not using. You can then try disabling all remaining modules. Your site should then load. From there enable each module type until you get the error again to try and find the offending module.

Hi Ciaran
So, the site now works with the updated version of J51_news, which is great, but I've just come to make the changes to the J4 Skylar template and the layout is a little wonky. Again, I know this is something that's not normal as I've installed Skylar on other J4 sites with no problems. Could you have a look again for me please?

Hi Liz
Is this issue present on all browsers? Is this still an issue if you do a full refresh on your browser (CTRL + F5)?
