Hi, I am setting up a website using the Calibra Template. I would like to put a video on to one page and have downloaded the JW Player. I do not understand how to upload my video so that it shows on my website. I don't want to upload it into YouTube first and I can't upload it into my media manager as it exceeds 10MB. Can anybody explain to me how to do that? Thank you and cheers, Michael

Hi Michael

Your best option may be to upload your video via FTP. A popular free FTP client is FileZilla... https://filezilla-project.org/

You should be able to obtain your FTP login details via your hosting provider.

Alternatively you could ask your host admin to increase your PHP upload limit to exceed the size of your videos,

Hi Ciaran,
I have now spent several days trying to get my head around ftp and how to put a video onto the website. I have downloaded Cyberduck (as I have a mac computer) and I managed to upload my video into the ftp server after I have created a new ftp account. So far so good. But when I copy and paste the URL into the JW Player (it is a http://ftp. URL) and try to play the video on my website it tells me "Error loading media: File not found". What am I doing wrong, is there a way out of this? I really appreciate your help - I am just so bloody new to this whole thing and unfortunately got stuck again...
Thank you and cheers, Michael

Hi Michael

Presuming you have been able to access the root of your Joomla installation via FTP (should be in your public folder. eg. 'wwwroot' or 'public_html'). Uploading your video to lets say your 'images' folder, the URL to your video would then be something like...

http://www.yoursite.com/images/yourvideo.mp4

Hope this helps.

Hi Ciaran,
Still didn't work - I think the problem is that the www. doesn't appear in the URL that I get from my video upload (I get the URL through Cyberduck) - it always comes as htpp://ftp...
I tried to upload a YouTube video and that worked out fine. I searched for answers in my cpanel but just can't find anything that would give me any hint of what to do... - it just doesn't seem to connect the URL - arrrghhhh.... I am sure it is just a small thing that I do wrong but I don't know what. Is there any possibility that I can upload the video into my cpanel / ftp client and it comes with a www.? (apologies again, I really am not very experienced in this stuff...) Thanks so much and cheers, Michael

Hi Michael

It appears you are trying to link your video using a FTP URL which will leave your image inaccessible unless you include FTP access details with your URL (dont do this!). What is the URL you are using to the video?

Hi Ciaran, thank you for your reply - yes that makes sense - I used an FTP URL. I also read in the JW Player site that from mid next year onwards they won't support FTP any more (whatever that means...). I just don't seem to be able to upload the video onto something other than YouTube to create an URL that I can then use with JW Player. In utter frustration (:-)) I now have uploaded it into YouTube and have linked this URL to the JW Player which is working fine - but I still hope that I find another way as I don't really want the videos to be in YouTube. Just wanted to say Major Thank You to you for the support I am getting from you - it is very kind of you! Cheers, Michael
