Is it possible to add url links onto the main slideshow or do I need a different module for this?

Sorry to say at present this option is not available with our J51_Slideshow. As suggest you can place an alternative module in the showcase module position with this option available (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/photos-a-images/slideshow).
