How do I add a phone number to the top right of the header above the Social Icon area of the template. I have tried several things, but to no avail.

Your best option would be to create a new module position to accommodate your phone number in this area of the template. Details on doing so can be found here.. http://www.joomla51.com/tutorials/item/creating-a-new-module-position-in-the-header-area-of-your-template
