I am trying to add a module position above the main menu extending the width of the website. I have tried: https://www.joomla51.com/tutorials/template-customization/creating-a-new-module-position-in-the-header-area-of-your-template and it does add a module position but everything underneath it is messed up. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hello

Have you considered using either the header-1 or header-2 module positions that already exist in this area of the template? If the style of these positions is not suitable it may be easier to customise them rather than create new positions.
