There doesn't seem to be a way of changing the color of the menu background and main background. Even when I change everything to the example style four the blueish white turns into cream white.

Edit: It's not time-pressing. I chose to keep the cream-colored menu and background.

The menu background color can be changed from the General -> Body/Header Styling -> Menu Background Color option. I've tested this and it appears to be working without issue.

The article background color can be set from the General -> Modules/Component Styling -> Article Background Color. Tested and also appears to be working without issue.

I don't know how you tested it but it does not work with the Menu Background Color.

I have set it to #FFFFFF for the starting page (style J51_Hayley - Homepage) but the background of the menu (not talking the mouseover) is not #FFFFF. Depending on where I do a colog grab it's F4F4F4 or something else on the ligh grey scale. When I switch it to #000000 it obviously turns black, but the menu background simply isn't bright white.

from your answer I get that it is meant to be like that and I am fine with it, as I have changed my color set to adjust that.
So you can close the issue.

Hello

The menu does have a slight gradient effect over the color which is likely the reason for you been able to obtain true white. To remove this gradient, try adding the following to the Custom CSS field of your templates parameters (Extensions -> Templates -> [YourTemplateStyle] -> Custom CSS)....

.header_hornav {
background-image: none;
}
