This issue can be caused when text is copy and pasted from another document (MS Word, web browser) directly into your articles bringing with it spurious code (eg. unwanted tags or divs). May I suggest pasting the text into a simple text editor like Notepad and then copying from that back into your Joomla editor to remove any 3rd party formatting.
