I am getting a bit of an interesting (not good) display with the Skylar template. Could you please tell me how I get rid of the item boxed in RED.

To remove this element try adding the following to the Custom CSS field of your templates parameters (Extensions -> Templates -> [YourTemplateStyle] -> Custom CSS)....

.category-list .filters.btn-toolbar {

    display: none;

}
