Joomlas default banner module does not have this option however there is a number of 3rd party extensions available which may be suitable (http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/ads-a-affiliates/banner-management).

A new instance of your slideshow module can be created by navigating to Extensions -> Module Manager -> New -> ImageSlideshow which can then be placed in the position of your choice.

I have the following jquery script running here: http://www.basilicatacultural.ca/main/sponsors/sponsors.htm and I want it to run on this homepage http://www.basilicatacultural.ca/ in left hand column below "support our sponsors" instead of the banner module.

I do not know how to add anything to the left column that is not a module. The support our sponsors image is actually a part of the background image because I could never figure out how to access the <div id="leftcol"> in the admin panel. I could add the slider module as suggested but it will not allow me to have each image have its own link. A module seems overkill too when the jquery is so light.

Any help greatly appreciated or a link to any documentation. Thanks!

Try using a 'Custom HTML' module (Extensions -> Module Manager -> New -> Custom HTML), this will allow you to an image/text to a module position.
