Interesting that you should ask...I just ran into the exact same issue today...
In my case, I had the problem because I installed a new extension called "GCalendar" and that had a jquery component that was causing the issue.
Most of the problems I have read on the net about Autson not working is because of jquery conflicts with another extension. You might want to look into that...

I went into Plug-in Manager and turned off System-GCalendar.

Autoson Slideshow started working again.

Does that mean GCalendar is incompatible with the Oxygen template? Or do I use another version of jquery? But if so, which one?

I have both GCalendar and Autson working now.
This is what I did...
Open "System - GCalendar" plug-in
Under Basic Options, change the "Load jQuery" to "GCalendar only".
Try that and see if it works for you too... hope this helps...
