New EU VAT Rules for 2015

on Wednesday, 28 January 2015. Posted in Blog

As of 1st January 2015 you will notice that if you are purchasing from the EU, VAT will be added to any online purchase of digital products. This is due to the introduction of new rules surrounding EU VAT implemented at the start of the year.

To put it simply, if you are a resident of the EU, instead of paying the VAT rate of the country you are purchasing from, you will now pay the VAT rate of the country where you the consumer resides. As Joomla51 is an Irish based company in the past Irish VAT rules allowed for a exemption from VAT on all digital export. Therefore in the past you would have notice that there was no VAT on any Joomla51 purchase. However since these the new EU rules are in place EU customers will pay their local VAT on any Joomla51 purchase. So for example if purchasing from Spain you will pay the VAT rate of 21%, if purchasing from Sweden it will be 25% etc.

It is worth noting that if you purchasing from a company and you have a valid VAT number you will not have to pay the VAT on your purchase. We have provided a field to add yoru VAT number to our checkout. Once our system checks that your VAT number is valid then the tax will removed from the purchasing price.

To all non EU customers you will be happy to hear that none of the above will apply to you and all purchases will continue to be at the flat rate with no added VAT :)
